She left him a rose on his pillow. She took a lot of stuff, some of it hers, some of it his. She left behind a lot more. He understood everything that had been taken and and left behind–it was exactly what he expected to have here and gone whenever she got it in her head to go.

But she left him a rose on his pillow. Where he was absolutely sure to find it. He didn’t expect that.  What did a rose on the pillow mean? He hardly dared to hope. Focus on the leaving–not the rose.
