Fiction: Legal Theft Project–Damage Done (154 words)

He was allowed to ask for things; asking meant he was getting better. It meant that whatever they had done to his head was starting to fall away.  It meant that he was thinking of himself as part of the team again, part of the group, part of someone who was allowed to get what they wanted, and that was a very big step in the right direction.

Carly knew that. Carly saw that this was a sign he was getting better. But Carly couldn’t hope—not really. What had happened was definitely not his fault—but…

The man that he was before was so much to her. And this broken, sad man that was kept carefully guarded and watched until they determined him strong or sane enough to be on his own again—He was never going to be her man again.  He was getting better. But he was no longer the best.
