Samuel knew that his job was to keep Drew safe. After losing both his best friends in one haunting night, after learning that he and Drew were the only two to survive that fire—Samuel Mission was quite clear to him. He’d been kept alive to keep that little boy safe.
He took to the task with gusto. He made sure to get everything Drew could have ever hoped for. He bent over backwards to get him the very best. The boy was an orphan before his second birthday, with some pretty nasty scar damage the length of his leg—but Samuel made sure that he wanted for nothing—that as best he could, Drew might not even realize he had been denied something.
He owed Drew a happy life. He owed Drew’s parents that. At the very least—there were worse ways to deal with survivor’s guilt.
