Fiction: Goodbye (99 words)

“Don’t say it.”

“Don’t say what?”

“Don’t say what you were about to say.” He pulled her in close, but didn’t kiss her.  If you say it—I can’t pretend I don’t know.  If I can’t pretend I don’t know…”

“I know.” The words were barely a whisper, she sat up a little straighter, gave a cough, and tried again, this time a bit louder, “I know. I just want you to know that—“

“I do. I know. I understand just—please.” He whispered. He dropped a quick kiss into her hair and she felt his tears. “Please. Don’t say it.”
