Fiction: New Work ( 201 words)

13 Feb

“You are beautiful, you know that?”

Anne practically jumped out of her chair as she looked up from her work.  She hadn’t noticed that Ben had come in and he startled her.  “I’m sorry?” she asked to buy time as she silently willed her heart to return to a normal pace.

“You are absolutely beautiful when you get so wrapped up in all that nonsense. And you startle easily, which I know but always forget. I’m sorry. Forgive me?”

“Yeah, yeah. Of course.”  She put a hand to her chest and took a deep breath. “You did scare me.”

“What are you working on?” He asked, sinking into the armchair that had been added to her study just for him.

“It’s new.” She said simply.  That was part of their code.  Code for “this is going to take a while to explain, and one I’ve started I am not going to stop so you’ll be here for the long haul.”  It was his cue to get out now if he had plans to do anything else for the next couple hours or so.

But not today. Today he settled back a little into his chair and smiled.  “New? Oh, do tell.”
